Outside Central Air Unit Will Not Turn Off

Outside central air unit will not turn off. If the high pressure lines from the condenser to the furnace or the evaporator coil in the top of the furnace are iced up then shut the system down. Either turn off the breaker in the panel or pull the disconnect switch outside at the condenser. If it does the problem is not likely the thermostat. Your system is probably low on freon and needs to be recharged.
If the unit continues to run it may be the thermostat. Wait to see if the air conditioning unit fan eventually shuts off. If you do not have a reset switch you can turn off your air conditioner at the thermostat and wait for 5 minutes before turning it back on. To turn the blower fan off simply set your thermostat to the auto option.
